June 22, 2004
Dear Captain Bockmiller:
It is my sincerest pleasure to inform you that you have been selected as the July 2004 recipient of Costa Mesa's Mayor's Award! The Mayor's Award Program was designed to recognize individuals in the community who have displayed exemplary qualities of leadership and volunteerism, or have performed an outstanding act of service.
During a routine expedition to Avalon, members aboard your tall ship, Argus, spotted a scuba diver floating in the ocean, who had gone adrift from his watercraft. Calling into action the Man Over Board drill, you and your crew pulled diver Dan Carlock from the water to safety aboard the ship. Giving him dry clothes and warm food, Mr. Carlock was saved from the early stages of hypothermia.
You and your crew are to be commended for your excellent seamanship in quickly working as a team to rescue Mr. Carlock. As time was of the essence, your actions made the difference in what could have been a life and death situation. You are an asset to our community, and I thank you for your outstanding act of service.
As you have already confirmed with my staff, we will publicly honor you at the City Council meeting of Tuesday, July 6th, 2004. The meeting will take place in the Council Chambers at 6:30 p.m., at Costa Mesa City Hall, 77 Fair Drive. We look forward to honoring you in this way.
