Youth Open Gym
Youth (17 and under) can enjoy basketball for free during Youth Open Gym hours at the Downtown Recreation Center (DRC). For more information about Youth Open Gym, call  (714) 327-7560. Participants in sixth grade and below must be accompanied by an adult. Participants in 7th to 12th grade must display a valid student ID to play unaccompanied by an adult.

Recreation Leader in Training (RLIT)
The Recreation Leader in Training offers teens (ages 13-17) opportunities community service hours and work experience through the Parks and Community Service Department's many programs. RLITs may assist with Recreation on Campus for Kids (ROCKS) which is an afterschool program at all 11 of NMUSD's elementary schools in Costa Mesa. With enough requisite experience, RLITs may also assist as a Swim Instructor Aid at the Downtown Aquatic Center, or alongside Recreation Leaders at the seasonal Camp Costa Mesa or special events. Applications may turned into the Downtown Recreation Center.

Teen Center
The Teens Programs Centers are FREE and safe hang out locations for teens! With guidance from Recreation Staff teens are able to enjoy a safe and fun space where they can work on homework, play video games, participate in monthly challenges, create unique art, and take part in special events. Teen Centers are located at Costa Mesa High/Middle School, TeWinkle Intermediate School, and the Downtown Recreation Center. Teen Centers observe all NMUSD holidays and school closures. Teens are REQUIRED to turn in a Registration Form in order to participate. For more information call (714) 327-7562.



Special Events

Several FREE special events are held at the Downtown Recreation Center throughout the year that include a pool party; a Halloween party with a haunted house, a dodge ball tournament; capture the flag, and a dance. To attend, Teens need to submit signed permission slips to the Downtown Recreation Center, the Costa Mesa Middle School Teen Center, or the TeWinkle Intermediate Teen Center. Teen Camp

Looking for a place to hang out and something to do this summer? Sign-up for Teen Camp! Teen Camp is for teens entering graders 7th through 10th grade. There are 9 separate action packed weeks full of adventure and fun! Each week will be crammed with a variety of activities and excursions. Teens and their friends will enjoy amusement parks, beaches, movies, malls, art & crafts, sports, and much more! In groups, teens will have the freedom to independently explore a variety of locations with check-in times with Recreation Staff. This independence promotes responsibility and helps build maturity within your teen. Teen Camp fees are $155 per week ($130 for week 2) in addition to a $5.00 material fee.
